Energy and Environment Protection of the Tropical Forests of Brazil Project BRA/93/044 -- Start Year: 1995; Approved Budget: US$880,000; End Year: 2001; Implementing Agent: NEX (National Execution Related Projects); Executing Agent: IBAMA Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources.. Project background and rationale: The Pilot Programme for the Protection of the Tropical Forests of Brazil (PPG7), resulting from an agreement between Brazil, the Group of Seven and the European Commission, postulates a need to reconcile economic and social aims with environmental objectives in the use of tropical forests. One of the components of this Programme - Demonstrative Projects A (PD/A) - is a financial mechanism for supporting innovative projects to be executed by local communities, NGOs and municipalities, which would generate replicable experiences of sustainable management of these regions natural resources. Project development goal: This project aims at contributing to the conservation of the Amazon and Atlantic Forest regions and associated ecosystems supporting sustainable development, through the participation and integration of the contribution of local population. Project immediate objectives and expected outputs: This project presents the following specific immediate objectives: 1. The generation of knowledge concerning conservation, preservation and sustainable management of natural resources, through demonstrative activities and the involvement and participation of local population; 2. To strengthen the capacity of the involved organizations in its capacity of elaborating and implementing subprojects through the establishment of a network among local population; 3. To disseminate the knowledge resulting from the experience of other communities, NGOs, policy-makers and governmental technicians. 4. The expected outputs are: a) the implementation and execution of 250 projects coordinated and accompanied by the Technical; b) Secretariat of the PDA; 2) 50 replicable projects disseminated; 5. To guarantee the sustainability of the actions undertaken, through the strengthening of NGOs and NGO networks. 6.
