Support to the Monitoring and Analysis of the Brazilian Tropical Rainforest (PPG-7 Programme)

Project BRA/98/005 -- Start Year: 1998; Approved Budget: US$3,607,000; End Year: 2001; Implementing Agent: NEX (National Execution Related Projects); Executing Agent: Environment Ministry

Project background and rationale:The Pilot Programme for the Protection of the Brazilian Tropical Rainforests (PPG-7), with a budget of US$ 50 million, represents the largest multilateral funded environmental programme ever undertaken in a single country. The programme, which comprises 10 projects, including this one, aims to maximize the amelioration of the environment of the Brazilian tropical rainforests through sustainable development by contributing to the continuous reduction of the deforestation, consistently with the development objectives of the country. This would contribute to the reduction of global emissions of carbon dioxide and conservation of biodiversity. Being a Pilot Programme, it is crucial that the experiences learned trough its implementation could rapidly be used in other contexts. In particular, continuous monitoring and analysis of this programme are required in order to extract and disseminate lessons that can be useful in the future.

Project development goal: This project aims at developing a system of integrated monitoring through indicators that allow evaluating the performance and results of the Pilot Programme as a whole, in order to use the experience acquired in other programmes and maximize the amelioration of the environment of the tropical rainforests.

Project immediate objectives and expected outputs:This project aims at developing a system of integrated monitoring through indicators that allow evaluating the performance and results of the Pilot Programme as a whole, in order to use the experience acquired in other programmes and maximize the amelioration of the environment of the tropical rainforests:

1. An integrated system of monitoring of the Pilot Programme will be established

2. Information on its results will be systematized.

3. New knowledge and experiences will be obtained and disseminated;

4. The performance of the PPG-7 in promoting sustainable development will been improved.
